challenges of using bibliometric data in policy making and to form guidelines for the more effective use of bibliometric data

In this presentation we discuss, from a computer science perspective, some of the research that we are conducting in bibliometrics with a view to obtaining the Ph.D. In the next few pages, we provide an outline of the research project called ‘Investigating challenges and good practice in the use of bibliometric data for research policy making’. Although we have made considerable progress on this project, the presentation is an account of work in progress. This research project straddles the boundary between computer science and information science. Viewed from a computer science perspective it lies within information retrieval and data mining. Within data mining, it focuses on knowledge discovery through mining Web based material. It also touches on other concepts used in computer science, for instance, keyword filters and query mining.
